Greetings everyone, and welcome to day six of God’s Feast of Tabernacles for this year. We say greetings to all those who are the saints of God, as well as all those who fear God and keep His Commandments. Today we’re going to have a look at: What is Man?
Psa. 8––here, David is being inspired by none less than God Himself. It starts with a magnificent opening where it says
Psalm 8:1: “O LORD our Lord, how excellent is Your name in all the earth! You have set Your glory above the heavens! Out of the mouths of babes and sucklings You have ordained strength...” (vs 1-2).
That’s a reference really to those who are in the Body of Christ,
those who are of ‘a meek and quiet spirit’
those who ‘tremble at God’s Word’
those that have humbled themselves before the mighty power of God
Verse 2: “Out of the mouths of babes and sucklings You have ordained strength...”
Yes, because those who are the babes and sucklings whom God has called, they know that they have their strength not in themselves, but in Almighty God!
“...You have ordained strength because of Your adversaries, to silence the enemy and the avenger” (v 2).
A very clear statement there about the enemy of God, the enemy of the Church, and the enemy of all human beings, in fact, worldwide.
Verse 3: “When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, the moon and the stars, which You have ordained.”
Now comes the question. When David looked up, as we can, and sees the multitude of the heavenly bodies, and what we can see is actually very little of what, in fact, is out there.
David says: Verse 3: “When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, the moon and the stars, which You have ordained, What is man...?” (vs 3-4)––in all that, in all Your creation?
“...that You are mindful of him, and the son of man that You care for him? For You have made him a little lower than God and have crowned him with glory and honor” (vs 4-5).
In other words, in the entirety of the cosmos, in the entirety of everything that exists, this is what God has done for man:
“...You have crowned him with glory and honor. You made him to have dominion over the works of Your hands; You have put all things under his feet” (vs 5-6).
Then David goes on to show what God had put under man’s feet, going right back to Adam, the days of Adam and Eve.
In Heb. 2 we have Paul quoting Psa. 8. He makes a slight change:
Hebrews 2:5: “For it is not to the angels that He [God] has placed in subjection the world that is to come, of which we are speaking.”
A very important statement, particularly as we are here observing God’s Feast of Tabernacles, and then a little later, the Last Great Day on the eighth day.
Verse 6: “But in a certain place one fully testified... [that’s David] ...saying, ‘What is man, that You [God] are mindful of him, or the son of man... [the descendants of Adam and Eve] ...that you visit him?’”
Yes, God––as we have the Scriptures––from time to time has visited man, and no greater time than when Jesus Christ was born of a virgin, and appeared as God in the flesh.
Verse 7: “‘You did make him a little lower than the angels; You did crown him with glory and honor, and You did set him over the works of Your hands; You did put all things in subjection under his feet.’.... [that’s us] ...For in subjecting all things to him, He left nothing that was not subjected to him....” (vs 7-8). Everything!
That’s all things, all things on earth, but eventually all things, including the entire universe!
“...He left nothing that was not subjected to him. But now we do not yet see all things subjected to him” (v 8)––that is to man, and the Son of man!
But what we do see, Paul continues; v 9: “But we see Jesus, Who was made a little lower than the angels, crowned with glory and honor on account of suffering the death... [His crucifixion, on the day of the Passover] ...in order that by the grace of God He Himself might taste death for everyone.”
Where did all this begin? I think we all know where we can go to find that out. Gen. 1! We will find, we know that there it says that God created the heavens and the earth. We also know that God created first the heavens, then the angels, as it says in Job, where they are called ‘the sons of God,’ and they sang for joy when God created the earth. Why? Because they were going to be inhabiting the earth for a very special reason!
Then, of course, what happened is we find that Lucifer, one of the great archangels, a cherub that God had created, rebelled against God, because he came to knowledge that he just simply could not stomach! He wrought havoc on the face of the earth and in his kingdom amongst the angelic realm.
Not all followed him, we know that, only one-third followed him. But we want to see that God created Adam and Eve, but here it just mentions what God’s Plan was.
Gen. 1:26––here is the beginning of the history of human beings, of mankind, in the man Adam and then his wife Eve. Very important, because this is: What is man? We’re finding out right here.
Genesis 1:26: “And God said, ‘Let Us make man in Our image, after Our likeness...’”
Image, we can say is His personality and the way He appears. We know that when Jesus Christ appeared as a man, He was God in the flesh. We know God made man in His image, man was made in the exact image of God, not just in His physical appearance. But also in His character!
But even Jesus had to maintain the character He had by being faithfully obedient to God the Father, otherwise we would not have a Saviour.
Verse 26: “And God said, ‘Let Us make man in Our image, after Our likeness; and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the fowl of heaven and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that crawls upon the earth.’”
What God did, we see in Gen. 2; God rested on the seventh day, and that became the day that is hallowed from that very day, the seventh day of the week. Every seventh day receives the same blessing, and it is to be observed in that same manner and fashion, as God mentions over and over and over again, there’s no mistake.
We find here that God created Adam and then Eve. Why was God doing that? What we find is that in John 14:30, that Satan is the ruler of this world.
He had been the ruler of the angelic realm in a previous existence of planet earth, but because of his rebellion, we know the earth was put into a state of absolute chaos and confusion. What we find in Gen. 1, God is re-creating the earth for the inhabitation of mankind!
God did not remove Lucifer, who became Satan, or the demons, the third of the angels that followed Him. Why did not God remove Satan at that point in time?
I think it becomes very obvious why he did that. But again, remember, Jesus said:
John 14:30––Jesus says: “...the ruler of this world... [Satan] ...is coming; but he does not have a single thing in Me.”
There’s a clue there about what God created man for. God wants us to come to that very same state of Jesus Himself! That’s a very important point.
But why didn’t God remove Satan, put him out of the way, so He’s not going to interfere with mankind? What we find in Gen. 2: God gave man His Commandments. It’s in that reference where God commanded man which trees he could eat the fruit of, and which tree he was not to eat of! Because when he ate of that tree, God says:
Genesis 2:17: “...in dying, you shall surely die.”
Then God, once He had given Adam His instruction, very likely, in fact, certainly on the Sabbath Day He would have begun His teaching––the very next day after He was created––God allows Satan into the garden!
Why would God do that?
Why didn’t God remove Satan completely and put Him into outer darkness right then?
God never wastes anything that He’s created. Because God says, “Let us make man in Our image and Our likeness.”
In other words, God here is beginning His Family of sons and daughters. But when Adam was born, when Eve was taken from the side of Adam and made to be his partner, they were innocent! They were pure!
But one thing they lacked was character. What did God do? God put before them––like He did for Israel and like he does for you and me today––what He does is He gives us a choice! He gave them independent, free, moral agency!
When He commanded man that he may eat of every tree of the garden except for the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, there was the test! There was a command!
Do you think Satan didn’t know that? Clearly he did, and he took advantage of it! But God exposed man in order for mankind to begin the process of building Holy, righteous, perfect spiritual character, which he did not have.
God was prepared to allow Satan to come into the garden and tempt Eve! We know the result of that, they sinned! Because of that, because of that sin, what happened?
Did they develop the character of God?
Or
Did something else happen?
What happened is that the sin that is in man, the sin that dwells within, was imputed into their life because of the wrong decision! Man was going to face a battle in order for him to build the character of God! We’ll see more of that as we proceed.
Let’s just go back and have a look at one Scripture over in the book of Jude, regarding Lucifer and what happened to him, that he became Satan and his angels became demons. This is an important part of Scripture. Here what Jude is telling us, that the angels originally had the habitation on the earth.
Jude 6: And the angels who did not keep their own original domain, but deserted their habitation... [Where was the habitation? Planet Earth!] ...He is holding in eternal bonds under darkness unto the judgment of the Great Day.”
But again, as we say, God did not remove Lucifer, who became Satan at that time, but God instead now re-created the earth, placed man on there as His first step in replacing Satan and his demons in the Government of God!
That meant a battle between man and Satan, and between Satan and God! But God had a plan ahead of time; God was ready for it.
What IF Adam and Eve had obeyed God and hadn’t eaten the fruit of the tree?
That’s a what if question. We may find an answer to that sometime in the future. but right now, we don’t even need to go down that path. The path we want to go down is the path we have before outlined in Scripture!
After man sinned, we come up to Gen. 3, and we come to that very important Scripture.
How many times do we go to the Scripture? Over and over and over again, because it brings about the very first of God’s Festivals––after the Sabbath––His annual Holy Days, beginning with the Passover.
Yes, first for the Sabbath, a command of God that man is to observe throughout his generations. Man will continue to observe that even after the return of Jesus Christ. Those who say we should keep Sunday instead of Saturday, they’re liars! They’re repeating the lies of Satan the devil! Nothing less than that. That’s where that comes from.
But once Adam and Eve sinned, we know that in Gen. 3:15, God began to set the rest of His Plan. Here He lays the foundation of His Plan! Because Adam and Eve sinned, and because Adam was instrumental in that sin, God gives this declaration:
Genesis 3:14: “And the LORD God said to the serpent, ‘Because you have done this you are cursed above all livestock, and above every animal of the field. You shall go upon your belly, and you shall eat dust all the days of your life. And I will put enmity between you [Satan] and the woman’” (vs 14-15).
That woman we find is a reference to the virgin Mary.
“...and between your seed...” (v 15).
That is Satan’s demonic realm, but also those human beings that are his followers, those who do his will!
Verse 15: “And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her Seed...”
The ‘Seed’ here, in your Bible, should be in a capital ‘S,’ her Seed is a reference to Jesus Christ. Most Biblical scholars and theologians recognize that this is a reference to Christ and to His crucifixion.
“...He [Christ] will bruise your [Satan’s] head...” (v 15).
This is the reference. When is that going to happen? It’s going to happen on a future Day of Atonement, when Christ will remove Him for a thousand years!
Yes, he’ll come back at the end of the 1,000 years for a brief period of time, then he will be cast into the Lake of Fire, where the Beast and the False Prophet had already been cast. Then he will, with his demons, inhabit a place of absolute outer darkness!
That’s the effect, never again to interfere with God’s making of man to rule over all things. But that’s a time for the future.
Verse 16: “To the woman He said, ‘I will greatly increase your sorrow and your conception––in sorrow shall you bring forth children....’”
Yes, children that will have the opportunity of being part of the very Family of God, the sons and daughters of God! But they have to understand the Sabbath Day and keep that so that they can:
come to know who God is
begin to have an intimate relationship with Him,
to understand His plan for mankind
We have in major book––God’s Plan For Mankind Revealed by His Sabbath and Holy Days––which brings all the Scriptures regarding God’s Plan for mankind, pulling all the Scriptures from throughout the Bible where they’re referenced so it’s easier for us to understand God’s Plan for mankind as it is in His Sabbath and Holy Days, and of course, His Festivals, as well. That’s very important!
Verse 16: “To the woman He said, ‘I will greatly increase your sorrow and your conception...’”
She was going to have children, which are potentially––which were potentially, and are today potentially still––sons and daughters of God. But there is a path we have to follow!
Genesis 2:16: “...‘You may freely eat of every tree in the garden, but you shall not eat of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil...’” (vs 16-17).
Isn’t it interesting? It’s very interesting indeed!
What does Jesus tell us? We see it recorded there in Genesis 2, Jesus said that we should enter the narrow gate! God told Adam right back at the beginning, He commanded Adam to obey Him! That’s the narrow gate that Jesus said!
What about the wide gate? As a matter of fact, Adam and Eve began their life––once God had instructed them––by making the wrong choice! They chose the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. That is the wide gate that leads to destruction! That was right there from the beginning!
But God’s answer to that is here in Gen. 3:15. We can see here, because we have the rest of the Bible, it says, He [God] will bruise your [Satan’] head.
What does that tell us? In order for Christ to bruise Satan’s head, Christ had to be born!
then Christ had to be crucified: Sabbath!
then there had to be Christ’s return to this earth: Feast of Trumpets
then the Day of Atonement, which pictures Satan’s removal, before
the beginning of the 1000 year Reign of Christ: the Feast of Tabernacles
which we’re observing right now.
then finally, it will be The Last Great Day, which is the 8th day of the Feast. Here we have it. This is the beginning of God’s Plan!
God is showing through Gen. 3:15, through the Passover, that that opens up the way for man now to be restored to God! That demands and requires what? It requires the Feast of Unleavened Bread, the purifying of man through the blood and sacrifice of Jesus Christ! It requires repentance and baptism and receiving of the Holy Spirit. That’s all wrapped up there in that statement.
That takes us to Pentecost! Pentecost is the day that God is going to resurrect His firstfruits!
Those who were under the historical period of the Old Testament and the Old Covenant, God––even though they did not experience Christ––what they did is because God called and worked with those who sought Him and worked with Him. God actually gave men like Abel, Enoch, and then Noah––which is a type of how God is going to save the Church in that sense––once the terrible times of Tribulation come.
Yes, that requires the Passover! The Passover then leads into the Days of Unleavened Bread, which is a time of learning to purify ourselves:
by following the Word of God
by following in the footsteps of Christ
by obeying the voice of God
That’s what God was telling Adam when He said, ‘Adam, I command you this.’ God was telling Adam, ‘Obey My voice.’ He was also telling Him the same thing that Jesus said, ‘that man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.’
God had prepared him, but man was weak! Remember, God did not remove Satan. God did not remove him as ‘the ruler of this world,’ because God was preparing a Family. That Family headed up by Jesus Christ and all the saints, once they’re the sons and daughters of God, then Satan will be replaced! In the meantime, God has left him here on the earth.
Why? Because Satan, with his temptations, man––particularly those whom God has called, and those who understand God’s law––has to fight in a battle, struggling against Satan, the devil! That’s how God is forming the character in man.
Jesus said, ‘Strive to enter through the narrow gate.’ That’s what God wanted Adam to do. But he knew that likelihood, a very real possibility, that he was going to fail!
That’s where God had His plan to deliver man from sin. It’s all part of the process of building character, the very character of God. God says, “Let Us make man in Our image,” so we know that we look like God in person. But now God’s Plan is to build our character when we’re born.
We were born, yes, with a sin that dwells within, but we were born basically innocent. It didn’t take long for that innocence:
to be upset
to be destroyed
to be demolished
in many people!
Let’s turn to one Scripture that helps us understand what God is doing: Gal. 4.
this is what man is
this is what man was created for
this is the goal of man
this is how the character of God is being formed within us
providing we continue striving, not only to enter the narrow gate! We’ve already done that, but now that we continue:
to strive to walk along that path
to walk along the way that Jesus walked
that very same path without sin!
His blood sacrifice was there for you and for me when we do sin.
Gal. 4:19––this is so powerful because it tells us God’s Plan for mankind. It tells us what God is forming in us for and how it is to be done. Paul says, and he’s addressing us on behalf of God the Father and Jesus Christ. They’re speaking directly to us in this:
Galatians 4:19: “My little children, for whom I am again laboring in pain...”
As the Apostle of God to the Gentiles, with all those Churches that God raised up through him in the manner that we can read.
“...I am laboring in pain...” (v19).
Notice very carefully the next statement, because this is why God created Adam and Eve. This is why you and I are in the Church of the Living God today; the Church that Jesus Christ established and continues to build and will do so right up until the very end.
“...until Christ has been formed in you” (v 19).
That goes right back to what God had in mind when He molded the dust of the ground, the clay into man. Because of that, and because of Eve, you and I exist!
We, of all people, little children that God has called, we’re God’s little children, through His calling, through His granting us the ability to repent of the sin that dwells within, and the sin that we do. He drew us to the waters of baptism, and we entered that baptismal covenant death with Jesus Christ.
We committed ourselves to die to this world so that Christ can be formed within us!
Philippians 2:5: “Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus.”
We can tie that in with Gal. 4:19, but Paul is not finished with the subject:
Verse 6: “Who, although He existed in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God... [What did He do?] ...But emptied Himself...” (vs 6-7)––of all His power and Divinity and the glory that He had when He was originally with the Father in the first place!
Sidebar: John 1:1: “In the beginning was the Word... [‘Logos’] ...was with God... [‘Theos’] ...and the Word [Logos’] was God [Theos].
What do we have there? We have God and we have the Word! We have two beings right from the beginning, even before the creation of the heavens and the earth! What does that tell us? It tells us what God is saying in:
Genesis 1:26: “...Let US...”
John 1:1––tells us that God is Father and Son, which we learn that later, was ‘Elohim’ and of Jehovah Elohim. In other words, there are two beings.
In fact, one of the translations I have, it actually has Jehovah Elohim as written in English, like in a possessive case. In other words, Jehovah, who we know is Christ, is of Elohim, Who is God! Very interesting.
Philippians 2:8: “And being found in the manner of man, He humbled Himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.”
But he emptied himself of everything, as it says in verse 7. We do not have anything like that to empty ourselves of. But what do we have that we must empty ourselves of? The very mind of Satan! The sin that dwells within, which has a foundation of vanity and pride and arrogance and every evil that exists!
We may not perform every evil, but we’re still guilty of sin and death. If we can work with all our energy and strength on that particular factor, as it says: Jesus emptied Himself of all His glory!
Read Ecclesiastes, where Solomon writes that everything, every chapter of Ecclesiastes shows us that vanity is the enemy of God and the enemy of man!
God dealt with it first with Lucifer, and because of his sin, he was cast out. Let’s have a look at one very important Scripture, which helps us also in this topic of: What is Man?
We’re in a battle, a battle that will end for us and for all mankind. Some of that will end when Christ returns, removes Satan, and the new world is brought in: the Kingdom of God.
Satan will have been removed, and all the earthly kingdoms that Satan is the ruler of now, They will all be destroyed, totally destroyed, and that’s important. What will remain? Those who live through the 1,000 year reign of the Feast of Tabernacles. Those who live through it will be resurrected and live through the time mentioned as the Last Great Day or the eighth day of the Feast! They will not have to face Satan the devil, his demons, his temptations, they will only have to battle and fight against the sin that dwells within!
We are the Church of God, that’s not a boast, that’s a statement of God, because God is the One Who has built the Church through Jesus Christ. It’s God’s Church, but Jesus Christ is building it.
Right now, our warfare is so great, and it has to be. This is why God allowed Satan to remain on earth, why He didn’t remove Him, because God begins His Family by establishing kings and priests! Jesus Christ is the first!
Jesus Christ is the King of all kings and LORD of all lords. You and I, because of our battle, will qualify, IF we continue to the end, to be kings and priests under Christ. Christ was successful:
He overcame Satan
He overcame the world
He overcame the sin that dwelled within Him
After His crucifixion and resurrection, He then ascended and sits at the right hand of God the Father, not only as advocate as our King and Lord of Master, as He will be in the coming Kingdom, but also High Priest after the order of Melchizedek!
It’s interesting, as High Priest after the order of Melchizedek, He actually went and sat down beside the Father. You know, that in the earthly priesthood, the priests in servicing the tabernacle, never once sat down. That was never a part of their task.
Jesus Christ, the ultimate in priesthood, as High Priest, totally completed His role as the sacrifice of God, and has been restored to His full power and glory! Because he’s finished the work that was a type in the old tabernacle and temple, now He can sit down with that job completed! But His job, His work is ongoing, and will continue to be ongoing throughout the ages of eternity!
2 Corinthians 10:2––notice this warfare: “But I am beseeching you so that, when I am present, I may not have to be bold with the confidence with which I intend to show boldness toward some, who think that we are walking according to the flesh. For although we walk in the flesh... [ and you and I do]...we do not war... [yes, we’re in a war] ...according to the flesh.... [like the nations are today, in all the wars that are taking place] ... For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God...” (vs 2-4)––where the weapons come from! They’re the weapons of God!
“...to the overthrowing of strongholds” (v 4).
Those strongholds are Satan’s bastions, and His attacks on us, His strongholds on us, which we successfully managed to break his power over us when we repented, we’re baptized, and received God’s Spirit by the laying on of hands!
Verse 4: “For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the overthrowing of strongholds”––Satan’s!
The world’s that tries to draw us in, or Satan tries to draw us into his kingdom through the world, and by his temptations that He constantly throws at us, like His fiery darts.
Those are all strongholds, but God has given us weapons:
Verse 5: “Casting down vain imaginations...”
One of our major enemies is vanity and pride, and oh does Satan like to throw his fiery darts and stir up the vanity and pride within us!
Verse 5: “Casting down vain imaginations, and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought.”
Remember Gal. 4:19, where Paul said that he was laboring that Christ may be formed in the brethren, but also the messages to us today.
Verse 5: “Casting down vain imaginations, and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity...”
This is how God today in all the saints is building the mind of Christ within us! He’s putting that mind within us so that we can become under Christ kings and priests, and that calling ends at the resurrection on Pentecost. Those who come into the Family of God after that, will not be the kings and priests that we will be under Christ.
The reason being is that because we have the greatest battle.
Verse 5: “...every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought into the obedience of Christ.”
by getting rid of all those thoughts
by constant communication and prayer with God the Father and Jesus Christ
by our constant study of God’s Word
and with God’s Spirit, what does He do? He not only gives it into our mind and in our heart, so that we won’t forget it, He says that He will also be inscribing it into our mind and in our heart, into our heart so that we don’t forget it!
So that we can be assured that we will be in God’s Kingdom!
Verse 6: “And having a readiness to avenge all disobedience, whenever your obedience has been fulfilled.”
Regarding the battle that we are in, the battle against Satan, the world, and the sin that dwells within:
Romans 8:31: “What then shall we say to these things? IF God is for us, who can be against us? He Who did not spare even His own Son, but gave Him up for us all...” (vs 31-32). Everything God has done is because of that one statement:
“...for us all, how shall He not also grant us all things together with Him?....[with Christ] ...who shall bring an accusation against the elect of God? God is the One Who justifies” (vs 32-33).
Yes, Satan’s accusing us every day, but God’s justifying us as long as we are daily repenting.
Verse 34: “Who is the one that condemns? It is Christ Who died, but rather, Who is raised again, Who is even now at the right hand of God, and Who is also making intercession for us.”
God is preparing His Family. That Family begins with God developing us as kings and priests. That’s why we have such a strong battle. That’s why God didn’t remove Satan, because Satan was being used in order that we would build the character of God the Father and Jesus Christ under extreme conditions, with all the help of Him!
God has provided everything that we need by the power of His Spirit, the spirit world in which we’re living and walking, even though we are still in the flesh. We’re walking through that narrow gate. We’re following the path, and that way is Jesus Christ. He’s the Door into the very Kingdom of God.
Verse 35: “What shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? Accordingly, it is written, ‘For Your sake we are killed all the day long...’” (vs 35-36).
That’s true! Killed not just in the flesh, but struggling daily with the threat of death on us every day IF we depart from the power and the presence of Almighty God!
“‘...we are reckoned as sheep for the slaughter’” (v 36).
Yeah, we are like sheep, and the time is coming when many of the sheep are going to be literally slaughtered and martyred.
Verse 37: “But in all these things... [in the present age, right up until the resurrection] ...we are more than conquerors through Him Who loved us.”
Maybe we can end with that statement from Matt. 25. Once we have successfully accomplished the will of God:
according to His Word
obeyed His Word
followed His instructions
loved Him
become like Him
having the mind of Christ
When we stand before Him, we can hear the statement which is taken from
Matthew 25:21: “And his lord said to him, “Well done, good and faithful servant! Because you were faithful over a few things...”’”
We’re going to be told by God the Father and Christ:
“...Because you were faithful over a few things, I will set you over many things....” (v 21).
Then He concludes, and we can consider this even though it’s from a parable, these are the words that God has caused to be written for us today:
“...Enter into the joy of your Lord” (v 21).
